This handy fire door gap gauge is a great teaching tool for quickly checking fire door gap requirement compliance.

DOOR TO FRAME CLEARANCES:

  • WOOD DOOR: MAX 1/8” (NFPA 80 v2013 6.3.1.7.1)
  • STEEL DOOR: 1/8” +/- 1/16” (NFPA 80 v2013 6.3.1.7.1)

DOOR TO FINISHED FLOOR CLEARANCE:

  • ALL DOORS: 3/4″ (NFPA 80 v2013 4.8.4.1)
  • IF THRESHOLD IS ABOVE 38”: 3/8” (NFPA 80 v2013 4.8.4.2)

HOW TO USE THE CLEARANCE GAUGE:

  • With the door closed, measure from the pull side of the door.
  • Measure the clearance between the door and frame:
    1. Top
    2. Hinge Side
    3. Latch Side
  • Between the doors (when installed in pairs)
  • Measure the clearance between the door and finished floor.
